He will just have to live with the CUSTOMS problems. As a returning resident, if the car meets Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, it should not take any more than a hour to get it through. He has to have owned it for a year before he comes to bring it in duty free however. ingram -----Original Message----- From: ] Sent: Friday, June 27, 2003 10:44 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: Can I drive my US registerd car in BC if Ihave a greencard? (a nightmare) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Thursday, June 26, 2003 12:05 AM To: CENTAPEDE Subject: Can I drive my US registerd car in BC if Ihave a greencard? Jurock.com 'Ask an Expert': A Question for You on Monday, June 23, 2003 at 10:39:22 My question is: Applicable to both US and Canada QUESTION: Hi, I am a US resident green card holder who would like to move to and work in Canada for 2 yrs +. It seems this would require changing the registration/insurance of my car from US to BC. Would I have any difficulty crossing the border back into US as a green card holder driving a BC registered vehicle? Could I keep the car registered to a US address while in Canada? Thanks David! ---------------------------------------------------------- david ingram replies: If you are living in BC, your car must be registerd in BC. If you are living in BC, you will also qualify for BC medical. BEFORE you leave the US, you have to fill in an I-191 form and submit it to your local immigration office. This form will allow you to return to the United States after your sojurn in BC. WITHOUT FILLING IN THE FORM BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE us, YUR REGISTRATION OF YOUR CAR IN BC AND TAKING OUT BC MEDICAL WILL MEAN THAT THE HOMELAND SECURITY PEOPLE WILL ASUME THAT YOU HAVE ABANDONED YOUR US RESIDENCE. You can find the form at http://www.bcis.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/i-191.htm Keping the car registered at a US address will mean that the car is uninsured in Canada if you have an accident.
