I am an American working in Canada on a Work Permit requested for me as a transfer by my employer. I arrived on 1-April-2003 and the permit allows me to stay for 3 years. I intend to apply for Resident status this year. Question - Can I contribute to an RRSP account and receive the appropriate income tax deduction for Fiscal Year 2003. I understand that the allowable amount is calculated on 2002 Canadian Income and does not consider US income, even though I am employed by the same company as last year. For 2003 your US return should have a form 2350 filed to allow you to be here for a full calendar year in order to exempt your Canadian Income on your US tax return on form 2555. The form would extend the filing date for your 2003 US 1040 until Jan 31, 2005 to allow you the full calendar year. Whatever you do, do NOT use the 330 day rule on form 2555.
