We have been told that I cannot work in the US until we have the "Labour Certification". We have been told that this can take 2-3 years. People going south (or north to Alaska) have to beware of recruiter comments which imply that the spouse of an H1 visa will be able to work. The explanation is usually couched in words that do NOT imply they are looking at a four year term during which the spouse will not even be able to volunteer. Your wife's company should start the process immediately. The biggest problem with the process is that if your wife were to change jobs, the whole process stops and you have to start over with another company. In the meantime, you should be enrolled in a University getting a degree in something which would then qualify you for your own TN or H1 visa. For instance, you can enroll in a computer science degree by correspondence at the University of Victoria if you cannot get into a local university at a decent price. Many states such as Colorado and California will treat you as a non-resident for tuition purposes and a $2,000 course becomes $20,000.
