Owns company and holding company - put cottage in it?
My question is: Canadian-specific QUESTION: Hi David, i own a business in Toronto which pays me a salary, and pays excess income to my Holding company. I would like to purchase a cottage with the funds from the Holding company. my questions are as follows: 1.) could i use the cottage for personal use? 2.) can my Holding company claim any expenses related to the cottage as a business expense? 3.) i desperately need an accountant! can you recommend anyone in Toronto? --------------------------------------------------------------------------- david ingram replies: I do not have enough information to answer properly. However: 1. You may use the cottage for personal use. There will be a personal benefit added to your income for the personal use. This would usually be added with the issuance of a T4 or T4A slip. If the cottage just sits empty 12 months of the year and if only used by you, the personal benefit would be the total of everything paid by the company to keep the cottage up. It is too complicated. buy the cottage in your own name. 2. If the cottage is rented out, expenses can be claimed on a T776. However, if it is for entertainment, the answer is generally "no" for yachts, and hunting lodges, since 1973. Cabins are usually included in this category unless rented out on a full time basis or obviously available for rent on a full time basis with a recognized rental agent or advertising campaign. 3. I have lost touch with Toronto Accountants after having offices there for years. However, Tom McCallum FCGA, past president of the CGAs of Ontario is the person to ask. He is presenting a seminar for the CGA's in Burlington tomorrow. He will kill me but his home number is (905) 666-3879 if I remember correctly. Tom is really the Accountant's Accountant specializing in business valuations, etc but he should be able to give you someone where ever you are because he speaks to accountants all over Ontario.
