Subject: Sole Proprietor
Hi David, I was given your name by ccccccccc. I was hoping you
might be able to answer a couple of questions for me in regards
to becoming a Sole Proprietor. To start, I live in xxxxxxxxxx
and work in Canada ( Canadian Citizen). I am an Engineer
working on a contract basis as of right now and suspect this will
become the norm. Question (1) Can a U.S. Business (Sole
Proprietor) conduct business in Canada and if so do they collect
GST? Question (2) For myself to start up a business in Canada,
do I require a Canadian address or can I use my home address
(US)?

As a Canadian citizen you can open any proprietorship you wish in
Canada. If you will receive more than $30,000 in billings, you
must also charge GST and therefore be registered. This will NOT
cost your employer any extra money because it is a flow through
credit for them.
You can use your US address. Whether you owe income tax to
Canada is another point. If you were living in the and going to
fifty different locations, you would likely be exempt from
Canadian Income tax under Article XIV of the US / Canada Income
Tax Treaty. If you are going to the same location (fixed base)
every day, you are taxable in Canada.
