US Canada Dual Citizenship - ask international income
Mr. Ingram, My family and I are Canadians living in the US. We are now eligible to apply for US citizenship. We are wondering if it is true that we can hold dual US & Canadian citizenships? If so, we want to find out the pros and cons of getting our US citizenship from both taxation and legal perspectives. Does your company have or know of a tax lawyer familiar with both US and Canadian laws in the Virginia area? If not in Virginia, how about in Toronto? Your help is much appreciated. Regards, __________________________________________________ david ingram replies: For a lot of information on the pros and cons of dual US / Canadian citizenship, read my Oct 1993 newsletter at www.centa.com. Go to the top left hand corner, click on newsletters, click on 1993 and click on October. I honestly do NOT know of anyone else in North America who has a knowledge of Canadian and US immigration matters And the tax matters surrounding them. Of the CA / CPA firms, I prefer KPMG as the best and there is a Stephen Or Steve in their office in Halifax who is very knowledgeable about US /Canadian Tax. However,, you would then need to deal separately with the US immigration part. I know lots in the Vancouver, Seattle, San Diego corridor but none in the east. However, the lawyer's lawyer about Canadians going to the US is certainly Joe Grasmick who is at www.Grasmick.com. He wrote a TN bible which everyone in the US immigration business has likely bought. I actually bought it but only 1/2 would print and I have never got around to getting the rest of it but I bought it as well. Joe charges about $300 US for a 1/2 hour phone consultation and I have never heard a complaint..He only deals with the US immigration part as far as I know. If you want to talk to me, I do one hour consultations for $400.00 Canadian and will advise on both the US and Canadian Tax and immigration matters.
