QUESTION: hi there
ok i have been trying to find the right department in australia to answer my
question but everyone keeps taking me a round in circles.
this is my story. my mother married in australia to a british man (dual with
the uk and australia) he adopted me when they were married and had my last
name changed to his. i am an australian citizen. my question is now can
apply for a british passport. i was born in 1981 but he adopted me in 1986.
am i eligible?

I am NOT an expert in British Citizenship by any means.
However, your question is not unique. I believe that it was automatic if
applied for by your step-father while you were a minor. More difficult but
not impossible now. The following Turks and Caicos Website has the British
