I was born a US citizen, began my working career when I
became a landed immigrant to Canada in 1977. I became
a Canadian citizen in 1997, at which time I "traded in"
my US passport for a Canadian passport. I filed US tax
returns but only until 1987. I have been a continuous,
full time resident of Canada from 1977 to the present
and I hold no property of any kind in the US since
leaving in 1977.
Must I still file a US income tax return every year or
should I just file the back returns from 1988 to 1997
inclusive?

You are still a US citizen unless you went to a
consulate and filled in a 4 page form and officially
renounced your US citizenship before a consular
official.
If you did that to avoid US income tax, you are not
allowed back into the US for any reason other than your
funeral.
If you did it as a conscientious objector, then you are
allowed back into the US.
And, another rule states that you are still liable for
US tax returns for ten years after renouncing your
citizenship so officially you should be filing returns
until 2007.
Merely taking out Canadian citizenship does NOT revoke
your US citizenship.
