QUESTION: Can I sell a US single family rental property and replace it with
a Canadian single family rental property of the same price purchase, thereby
deferring tax under like-kind trade?

You can roll the rental into another rental within the US.
You can roll a Canadian Rental into another Canadian Rental for US purposes
under a 1031 Rollover. You can do the same thing in Italy, France, Mexico,
etc.
However, you cannot do a section 1031 rollover where the properties are in
different countries.
