QUESTION:
I am a long term member of a Church registered in the USA as a 503(c)(3)
charity and listed in IRS Pub.78. The Church is not represented in Canada.
Is it allowed to deduct donations made to this US registered charity from my
Canadian Income Tax? The assessor says no. But I have heard that it is
legal under the terms of a recent Canada/US Income Tax convention. Where
Can I go to find out the details? Thank you.

You may deduct donations to any US charity if you have US income. If you
have no US income, you can deduct donations made to an Alma Mater (ie. your
old University or College) Fund.
No US Income, No deduction for US Charities.
Perhaps, if you had a stock or mutual fund portfolio, you could put it in a
US account and create some US income in that manner.
