living commonlaw in Canada - - making mortgage interest
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment QUESTION: My friend Diana and I have been living in the same residence since september 2002. I pay her room and board. The house and all the utilities are in her name and she takes care of all these bills. We do not have any joint bank accounts. Our insurances and investments are in our own individual accounts. If everything is seperate except for the fact that we are living together, does this mean we would have to claim as a common-law couple or can we legally claim single status. ======================================================================================================== david ingram replies: If you are living in the same bedroom most or all of the time or just on a pretty regular basis, you are a common law couple. If you are living in separate rooms and dating others, you are a boarder. Another "rule of thumb" - if your friends think of you as a "couple" and you live in the same house, you are a common law couple where you contribute to the family upkeep. ========================================= Fred Snyder and I are giving free seminars on making your CANADIAN mortgage interest tax deductible and ALTERNATIVES to RRSP Accounts at our new office at 1764 West 7th Vancouver.
