Canadian wants to work in the U.S presenting seminars.
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment QUESTION: I WISH TO CONDUCT SOME WORK SHOPS IN THE U.S, I AM A CANADIAN, WHAT KIND OF PERMIT DO I NEED TO DO THIS PLEASE? ===================================================== david ingram replies: Very difficult to do unless you have a University Degree in the subject and a US employer who wants to hire you to conduct the workshops because of your exceptional abilities or uniqueness. In this case, you would likely need an H1B visa which is used for people of exceptional abilities. If you were a recognized "artist" in your field and you were published in your subject, you could apply for an "O" visa. If you wanted to establish a business to run your seminars, you would likely need a clearly identifiable $75 to $100,000 US investment into premises or equipment to qualify for an E-2 visa. One method of qualifying would be to sell your seminars or course to a recognized college or University and have the University hire you as the teacher / professor of the course. In this case, if you have a teaching certificate or degree in the same field, you could likely go (in as little as one day) with a TN visa. Stay tuned. Some time in the next month I will be presenting my 4 hour US tax and working visa seminar. The November 1999 Newsletter at www.centa.com will help you as will the [Entering the US] and the [US/Canada Taxation} section. last, but not least, the B status (not a visa) could work if you do less than seven seminars in a year for a Canadian Company. However, you cannot be paid anything more than an honorarium and your plane fare, hotel room, etc. and it does not sound to me that you are interested in that level. Your email address indicates to me that you are interested in motivational seminars. Over the years, I have known a dozen people who have tried to run real estate, motivational, and sales seminars in the US and eventually run afoul of the US authorities. Usually after about the 25th appearance. Don't go without a visa. Getting caught today will cost you $5,000 US in bail money and you will be banned form the US for five years under ER (expedited removal). It is an expensive and demeaning process with a typical immigration jail stay of 3 to 5 days while you arrange for a wife or husband or brother to come up with $5,000 to get you out.
