401K <versus> RRSP - from ask an income tax and
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment Hi Dave, You helped me out a few years ago with a tax problem and now I have another. To refresh your memory, I'm a Canadian, resident for years in the States. I'm now moving back across the border, but I'll continue to work for the same US employer (commute). I know 401K plans aren't deductible in Canada, so should I stop contributing? On the other hand, RRSPs aren't deductible in the States...should I still start one? Once I move, I'll need someone like you to do my taxes. What do you charge to do US/Canadian taxes? Thanks again, XXXXXXXXXXX PS. Please don't sign me up for the list. With this free account the messages overwhelm it and I run out of space fast. __________________________________ david ingram replies: Are you getting a commuter green card? No matter. Quit the 401K and do the sample return to find out if an RRSP will do you any good. I can make a good argument for your not having an RRSP in the first place. We are doing weekly free seminars in Vancouver to explain the technique every Wednesday evening at 7 PM at 1764 West Seventh (corner of Burrard). I have no idea where you are but if it happens to be around Vancouver, call (604) 731-8900 to reserve a seat. What do I / we charge? I would likely charge $700 to do the US / Canadian returns as you describe them. They could be as low as $500 and as high as $1,000 if you have Mutual funds and/or a rental property, or employment expenses, etc. ============================================================= Answers to this and other similar questions can be obtained free on Air every Sunday morning.
