FICA <> CPP when Moving to Canada Temporarily
I am hoping you can help me or refer me to someone. I'm an American who will be working in Canada next year. Do I still have to pay FICA and Medicare taxes? If I file as self-employed does that make a difference? ================================= david ingram replies: If you are being transferred for less than five years, your employer can write to Canada and exempt you from Canada Pension Plan and continue to pay into FICA. If you are working or a new Canadian employer, you have to pay CPP and so not pay FICA or Medicare. Self- employed does not make any difference. If Self employed and living in Canada you will pay CPP. We can help you with all your US / Canadian Tax and immigration problems.
