Canadian has been working in US for years without
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment David, Situation: I am a Canadian having been working in the US for a couple of years(H1-B). Have not filed tax return ever since my first full US year. However, in fear of the inconvenience of opening a bank account, I still keep my Canadian bank account. Overheared that I may still subject to Canadian Income tax as I did not make myself staight non-resident by closing the bank account. And all these years tax difference will be charged with interests, unless I will never come back to Canada. Question: 1) I most probably will stay in the States for 20 more years(on TN). To avoid doubling my headache during tax season, what is the COMPLETE list of things should I do to establish my non-resident Canadian status? 2) If I did not do all that are required for a couple of years will I be charged the tax difference and interests? ======================================================================== david ingram replies: I can fix it for you. Send us a copy of the last return you filed and any W2, 1099, T3, T5 slips or any other pieces of relative information. It is highly unlikely that you will have to pay any Canadian income tax. I need a statement from you about the number of days you were in the US versus Canada. Goto www.centa.com and click on print and read the section called US/Canada Taxation. It will or should make you feel better. You have a 19 out of 20 chance of getting a refund. ================================================= Answers to this and other similar questions can be obtained free on Air every Sunday morning.
