Green Card Holder wants to know what happens if she
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment QUESTION: I am a Canadian citizen living in the USA with Permanent Resident status. I am married to a US-born citizen, and we have a son who is about to apply for his Canadian citizenship. Although I have been in the USA long enough to apply for citizenship, I have never done so, because it has always been my intention to eventually return to Canada, which I plan to do soon. (I have also been reluctant to foreswear my Canadian citizenship, which I know is a requirement for US citizenship). That said, though, I am now wondering if it would be to my advantage to obtain US citizenship beforehand, thus giving me dual-citizenship in the eyes of the Canadian government, and possibly making it easier to travel between or spend time in both countries? Thanks in advance for the info. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- david ingram replies: There is no requirement for you to give up your Canadian Citizenship when you became and US citizen. Canada has allowed dual citizenship since Feb 1977 (but it is not retroactive) and the US recognized dual; citizenship retroactively in 1980 after a Supreme Court decision. Go to www.centa.com and read my October 1993 newsletter on Dual Citizenship for 12 pages of information on dual citizenship between Canada and the USA. Being a dual citizen will make your life much easier in the future in terms of being able to go back and forth across the border. The only disadvantage is that if you come back to Canada, you will still have to file a US return. Of course, in reality this is no more onerous than living in California and filing a California and US federal return and les onerous then living in the Bronx and having to file a Bronx, New York State and Federal return.
