Returning to Canada- Dual Citizens- Taxation Questions
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment This got caught in a spam filter. Only found it by accident looking for something else. David Igram, I called your office today looking to get some general and specific information on taxes. It was suggested by your office I e-mail you my questions, and then maybe also follow-up with a phone call. You have a great web site which is how I found your firm. My wife and I are dual citizens (Canadian/US) who have been working in the US past 8 years, and we plan on returning to Canada later this year. I am interested in some specific pre-move and after move questions. Specifically rates for general pre move consulting and tax return work to do for both countries for 2005. I tried to down load your article Dual Citizen- the good, the bad, the ugly but could not retrieve it. Pre-move: -any steps/actions we should consider prior to moving regarding date leaving (residency), 401K, 529 plan, capital gains or loses, SS, house sale proceeds to minimize tax implications Post-move -I need to file taxes every year in both countries, and assume due to higher tax rate in Canada likely will not have additional monies due to US when filing - concern I have is capital gains on stocks -Can I collect from Canada Pension and SS (I met the minimum points) when I retire Regards AXXXXXXXXX =================================================== david ingram replies: My phone consultation rate would be $350 Canadian out of country and $374.50 Cdn (including GST for those in Canada) for an hour's consultation. The October 1993 Dual Citizen newsletter should be downloadable or at least printable - you can go direct at: http://www.centa.com/CEN-TAPEDE/October_1993.htm I need more information to comment about higher taxes in Canada. Because of Alternative Minimum Tax, many are finding a small US tax bill although Congress is supposedly going to reduce this Alternative Minimum Tax. You can collect from both Social Security and CPP and OAS at the time. Answers to this and other similar questions can be obtained free on Air every Sunday morning.
