H1B Visa holder wreturning to the United Kingdom (Great
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment MessageHi there, I'm currently working in the states on a H1B visa. I'm due to leave the country next year to return back to the UK. Do I have an option to claim any taxes back that I've paid for the past 6 years? Thanks FXXXX =============================================== David Ingram replies: If you have been filing your 1040 and state tax returns, there would be no further refunds. However, being from England where the average person does not file an annual tax return, you may not have been filing your US returns because you think everything has been looked after. If this is the case and you have not been filing returns, get copies of the 2002, 2001 and 2000 federal and state returns right now and get them in before Dec 31st. You have already lost the ability to get refunds for 1999 and 1998. If you want to send us the W2 slips you have received (email, fax or mail), we would be happy to look after it for you and can look after the last returns when you leave for the United Kingdom. In our office, looking after returns at a distance by mail is the norm, rather than an unusual occurrence. ------------------------- For the benefit of our North american readers, Great Britain has a tax method where the usual person's return is looked after on an ongoing basis by means of payroll deductions. The only people who file a returns are those that have investment or business income or foreign tax credits, etc. ============= David Ingram's US/Canada Services US / Canada / Mexico tax and working Visa Specialists US / Canada Real Estate Specialists 4466 Prospect Road North Vancouver, BC, CANADA, V7N 3L7 Res (604) 980-3578 Cell (604) 657-8451 (604) 980-0321 New email to [email protected] www.centa.com www.david-ingram.com Disclaimer: This question has been answered without detailed information or consultation and is to be regarded only as general comment.
