This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment QUESTION: My fianc=E9e and I are considering becoming citizens of Canada and = moving there once we find jobs.=20 My question is, if we are dual citizens but continue to work and live in = the US until we find employment in Canada, to whom must we pay taxes?=20 Will we be taxed more than other people? Also, after we are married, we will be considered married in Canada, but our = marriage will not be legal in the US. How are we to file? ---------------------------------------------- david ingram replies: You cannot just become a Canadian citizen and move to Canada. To immigrate to Canada you must go through some steps. You can start by going to = http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/skilled/assess/Education.asp and filling out the self-assessment guide for immigration to Canada. = You need to score 67 out of 100 points to qualify. That will give you an idea if you will qualify. You may not qualify now = for instance because you do not have a job offer but would qualify if = you had a job offer and / or you enrolled in French Immersion classes = and got points for bilingualism. Being married if you are already living together is of no help. Canada = recognizes common law couples and same sex couples for immigration = purposes. You will not pay tax to Canada until you have Canadian Source Income or = have been granted residence in Canada and physically moved here. Go to www.centa.com and click on US/Canada Taxation for information on = the tax rules for an American Citizen living in Canada. We, of course, do this for a living. You can contact me at the numbers = below. My residence number is (604) 980-3578 for weekends and holidays. = I do not mind calls from 10 AM to 10 PM seven days a week and would = rather that you phoned at 5 PM on Sunday and someone else phoned at 7:30 = PM on Sunday than that fifteen people all called at 9 AM on Monday.
