I filed my return and was to get a $1700.00 return. then I did my wifes and she owed $1.48, and I now only got $200.00 Her income less than $18000.00 Mine $51000.00 Is there a quick reason why she drags my return down to nothing or in past years to owing. ------------------------------------------------ david ingram replies: You have been claiming your wife as a dependent on your return when she is not a dependent. If she has income of over about 8,000, she is not a deduction for you. In B C, a spouse is worth exactly $1,460.26 as a tax refund or less tax to pay. That is close enough to your rounded off difference of from $1,700 down to $200. Sounds like you have been doing the same thing for years. There should be an explanatory paragraph about your spousal deduction beeen reduced to "zero" on your notice of assessment. At least you did not end up with my $4,800,000 tax bill. ingram david ingram - [email protected] 108-100 Park Royal South West Vancouver, BC, CANADA, V7T 1A2 (604) 913-9133 - (604) 913-9123 www.centa.com Cell is (604) 657-8451 (10 AM to 10 PM seven days a week) US / CANADA / MEXICO Working Visa and Income Tax Specialists Be ALERT, the world needs more "lerts" --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
